These rare Senufo twin masks originate from the Boundiali region of northern Côte d'Ivoire, one of the historic centers of Senufo sculpture and a stronghold of the Poro initiation society. Workshops in the Boundiali area are particularly admired for their restrained geometry, elongated proportions, and harmonious balance between abstraction and natural form, producing some of the finest ceremonial carvings in the Senufo world.

The composition is carved with three legs supporting the paired figures, creating a striking sense of unity and stability. Each head is crowned by a chameleon, an important Senufo symbol of transformation, wisdom, and mediation between the human and spiritual realms. Such animal motifs are especially characteristic of northern Senufo carving, where sculptors frequently combined human figures with symbolic creatures to express cosmological ideas.

The masks are distinguished by long, slender noses ending in broad nostrils, narrow slit eyes, and tubular projecting mouths. These highly stylized features reflect the sculptural vocabulary typical of the Boundiali region, where artists favored elongated facial elements and controlled symmetry over naturalistic representation. The deep dark-brown patina, developed through ritual use and age, further enhances the sculptural clarity and ceremonial presence of the work.

The combination of paired figures, chameleon imagery, and the refined linear style characteristic of Boundiali makes these twin masks an exceptional example of northern Senufo ceremonial sculpture.
