A Tussian mask, Burkina Faso, Bafora region. Certificate of origin and provenance. Incl. stand.
Tussian masks are deeply connected to the Dó or Lo association, a spiritual institution responsible for guiding young men through initiation into adulthood. During these rites, the masks are worn in dances to welcome initiates and to invoke protective spirits. They also appear in ceremonies that bless crops, drive away malevolent forces, and honor the deceased.
Each mask is considered sacred and is often kept by the initiate after the ceremony, bearing a secret name. They are believed to possess magical powers and are used in divination practices to predict events and seek guidance from the spiritual realm.
