"Mumuye monkey masks have been collected or documented in the field in considerable numbers. No example, however, was collected before the end of the colonial period, which might mean that they are recent innovations. The deep striations on the heads of such masks presumably refer to women´s braided hair and are hence an anthropomorphic reference."
