A female Guro sculpture, Ivory Coast, collected in the region of Gohitafla of central Côte d’Ivoire and is attributed to the Guro people. provenance traces to the collection of Bakari Bouaflé, son of the noted West African art dealer Amadou Bouaflé, and subsequently acquired by Wolfgang Jaenicke.
The high forehead, narrow chin and the refined polished wood surface signal a mature phase of Guro carving tradition, in which abstract human-animal hybrid forms operate as spiritual intermediaries. The sculptur was likely used in ritual performance, possibly used in a Zamble or Gu ceremony.
