A Bamana Maternity, collected in the Tamani region, heavy, hard wood, traces of sacifications.
The Bamana (or Bambara) are one of the largest ethnic groups in Mali, known for a rich tradition of wood carving. Maternity figures, or Gwandusu, are often part of Jo society rituals—a women's initiation and leadership group. These figures honor ideals of fertility, motherhood, moral strength, and ancestral lineage.
The Tamani region in Mali is particularly known for distinct regional carving styles—simpler, more abstract, or highly stylized depending on the workshop or lineage.
