But they do not document anything that actually happened. Using artificial intelligence, they combine West African portrait photography, colonial archives, fashion images and historical exhibition scenes into a possible past.
People and African sculptures meet in it as physically and socially present actors. The images move handed-down roles: Who looks at whom? Who owns, interprets and presents art? And what ideas of Africa were produced by photography in the first place?
These photos does not see the images as historical reconstructions, but as a speculative archive. It asks which images of an African modernity could have existed – and why certain life, relationships and perspectives are missing in the real archives.
