Benin bell, “bust shape”, decorated with circles, lines and zig-zag patterns; a crack at the height of the circles, patina in different layers, signs of intensive use.

In all shrines and on all altars in honor of kings (‘Oba’), high dignitaries and wealthy families in Benin there were (and still are) bells made of bronze, called ‘Egogo’. They served not only as a musical instrument, but found their significance above all in the political and religious life of society. At Benin some bells were arrayed on altars and an important function was the “ringing in” of ceremonies in which the ancestors were called to receive offerings and to hear the prayers of their descendants.
