A male mask of the Ekpo society from the Ibibio people in Nigeria. The form consists of a voluminous structure of rectangular and round knobs in the coiffure part and is as high as the face part. This consists of a straight nose with strongly pronounced nostrils. Under the closed eyes there are piercings to see through as well as round deepened ears and a protruding mouth with a visible row of teeth; encrusted patina on dark heavy wood. The all-male Ekpo secret society was traditionally an important group among the Ibibio, whose task was to fight sorcery, punish crime and maintain public order. Masks of this kind are associated with ancestral spirits who lend their power to society.
