A Fon fetish figure of large stature with textile cords wrapped around it with two child figures attached to its back, as well as chains to which several padlocks and keys, bells, animal bones and teeth, vegetable fibres, iron parts and other small appendages are attached, the core figure made of wood has a coarse encrusted patina with strong traces and particles like feathers from ritual animal sacrifices with blue paint particles.
In Africa, sculpture is a symbolic writing intended for ritual use. The artist who makes a fetish has been commissioned to do so, usually by a fetisher. The artist makes the fetish accessible to the Vodun user through the things that the object expresses; there is no functional quest for beauty. Everything is pared down to the essential, dedicated to the purpose of the object, which is primarily mystical, magical.
