Description

A female Baule sculpture, Ivory Coast, standing on a round base, muscular legs ending in prominent buttocks, wearing a cloth encircling the hips, a slender torso with a protruding navel and tapering breasts, rounded shoulders leading to elongated slightly bent arms carved close to the body, the hands touching the abdomen, wearing five rings on the right upper arm, the torso is decorated with scarification marks, the elongated cylindrical neck supporting an oval head, a large mouth with full lips, a slender nose with a broad tip, high arched brows, the eyebrows and the nose are connected in the middle by scarification marks, almond-shaped eyes, hemispherical ears, further scarification marks on the face and the neck, the sculpture is capped by a striated two-parted coiffure with a ponytail at the back of the head; blackened patina, traces of age and ritual use, incl. stand.
